About this ingredient

Neem Flower Extract (Azadirachta Indica Flower Extract) is an aqueous or hydroglycolic extract of Indian neem tree flowers. Composition differs from neem oil: less azadirachtin, more flavonoids (quercetin, rutin, kaempferol) and triterpenoids. Mechanism. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action via NF-κB suppression and IL-6 reduction in keratinocytes in vitro (Subapriya 2005). Mild antibacterial activity against S. aureus and Cutibacterium acnes. Where applied. Ayurvedic and Indian cosmetics, problem-skin products, anti-dandruff shampoos. Rare in European and Spanish cosmetics. Concentration 0.5–3%. Evidence base. Human RCTs are few, mostly from India. CIR and SCCS have not published a separate assessment. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Although flower extract contains less azadirachtin than the oil, direct pregnancy data are absent. Oral intake in pregnancy is contraindicated (antifertility effect described in Indian traditional medicine). Topically at cosmetic concentrations avoid application on abdomen and breast.
