Peony Flower Extract (Paeonia Albiflora Flower Extract) is a hydro-ethanolic extract of white peony flowers. Active components are paeoniflorin, flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin), phenolic acids, essential oils. Mechanism. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action via NF-κB suppression and TNF-α reduction in keratinocytes in vitro. Paeoniflorin suppresses tyrosinase – mild brightening effect. Where applied. Korean and Japanese premium cosmetics (Sulwhasoo, Tatcha), sensitive-skin products. Rare in Europe and Spain. Concentration 0.5–3%. Evidence base. Human RCTs are few (n<30, mostly from Korea). CIR has not published a separate assessment. Pregnancy and lactation – no data. Oral peony in supplement doses is contraindicated in pregnancy (stimulates uterine contractility in experiments). Topical use at cosmetic concentrations has minimal systemic absorption, but manufacturers recommend avoidance.
