Lotus Leaf Extract (Nelumbo Nucifera Leaf Extract) is a hydro-ethanolic extract from Indian lotus leaves. Active components are flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin), alkaloids (nuciferine), and polyphenols. Mechanism. Antioxidant effect: neutralizes DPPH and ABTS free radicals in vitro. Suppresses tyrosinase in melanocytes (Choi 2015), which explains the brightening effect. Reduces sebum production via 5-alpha-reductase inhibition (in vitro). Where applied. Korean brightening serums and oily-skin products – Innisfree, Tony Moly, Sulwhasoo. Rare in Europe and Spain, more often a marketing additive. Formula concentrations 0.1–2%. Evidence base. No human RCTs; the evidence is in vitro and animal-based. CIR and SCCS have not published a separate assessment. Safety. Hypoallergenic at cosmetic concentrations, non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – topically safe; no direct data, but a long traditional use in Asia without reported harm.
