Rosehip fruit extract with vitamin C and carotenoids. Antioxidant potential in lab models; common in anti-aging formulas.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Small clinical studies exist for rosehip oil. Evidence for the extract is weaker.
Rosehip fruit extract (Rosa Canina Fruit Extract) is an extract from the fruits of wild rose. Contains vitamin C at high concentration (10-25 mg per 100 g of fresh fruit), carotenoids (β-carotene, lycopene, rubixanthin), flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids. Not to be confused with rosehip seed oil (Rosa Canina Seed Oil) – a different product. Where applied. Antioxidant serums and creams for mature skin (0.5-5%), brightening products, after-sun creams, products marketed as 'natural vitamin C'. In Spain popular in Trofolastin, Babé, Pranarom. Evidence base. In vitro the extract shows free-radical scavenging comparable to vitamin C, but topical skin bioavailability is lower than with stabilized L-ascorbic acid. Phetcharat 2015 (oral use) showed improved wrinkle depth and elasticity over 8 weeks. Topically – isolated pilot studies. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of rosehip extracts (Final Report 2014). Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. Allergic reactions are rare. May slightly tint skin at high carotenoid concentrations. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. No cosmetic restrictions. Oral intake of rosehip in tea or as a vitamin C supplement during pregnancy is also safe at physiological doses.
