INCI: Menthyl Anthranilate
Medium-strength UVA filter from the anthranilate group. Covers short UVA, but protective potential stays modest compared to modern molecules.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Old UVA filter with limited efficacy. FDA is reviewing its safety, and European brands have largely dropped it.
Meradimate (Menthyl Anthranilate) is an organic UVA filter based on the menthyl ester of anthranilic acid. Absorbs radiation in the 320–380 nm range (UVA-II + part of UVA-I). Mechanism. The chromophore absorbs UV energy and dissipates it as heat, preventing DNA and collagen damage. Efficacy is about 40% lower than avobenzone (Parsol 1789) – rarely used alone, only in combination sunscreen formulas. Where applied. Sunscreens in the US (FDA Cat I). Not approved in the EU – EU regulates UV filters by Cosmetic Regulation Annex VI, meradimate is not listed. Not commercially available in Spanish and European markets. Evidence base. FDA studies under the 1978 monograph confirm UV-protective properties. No standalone RCTs – tested as part of multi-component sunscreens. Safety. FDA classified as Category I (GRASE – generally recognized as safe and effective). Systemic skin absorption is low. In 2019 the FDA requested additional safety data for all organic filters except titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Pregnancy and lactation – manufacturers advise caution. No direct data. Alternative – mineral filters (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide), first-line in pregnancy.
