UVB and partial UVA filter that stabilizes avobenzone in SPF formulas. During prolonged storage it slowly turns into benzophenone with a limited toxicology base.
Topical application
DVery weak or conflicting data.
A 2021 study showed that octocrylene in sunscreens approaching expiry forms benzophenone in meaningful concentrations. For sensitive skin formulas with mineral filters are safer.
Octocrylene is a synthetic organic UV filter, the 2-ethylhexyl ester of 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylic acid. Covers UVB and partly UVA2 (absorption peak 303 nm). Often used as an avobenzone photostabilizer – without it avobenzone breaks down under UV within 30-60 minutes. Where applied. Sunscreens (up to 10% in EU and US, up to 8% in Canada), SPF makeup (foundations, BB creams, lipsticks). Benzophenone controversy 2021. The Sayre et al. study (Chem Res Toxicol, 2021) showed that during prolonged storage (>1 year at room temperature) octocrylene degrades into benzophenone – a potential endocrine disruptor (FDA TEA). Cosmetic manufacturers shifted formulations to stabilized variants after the publication, but older batches may contain meaningful benzophenone amounts. Safety. CIR/SCCS confirm safety at concentrations up to 10%. Systemic absorption through intact skin was reported in FDA Matta study (JAMA 2020) – octocrylene is detected in plasma after maximal application to 75% body surface area, but clinical significance has not been established. Non-comedogenic. Rare allergic reactions, mostly photocontact dermatitis. Pregnancy and lactation – acceptable. Despite systemic absorption reports, pregnant women use octocrylene SPF in practice – UV protection benefit substantially exceeds the theoretical risk. Alternatives. Tinosorb S and M (photostable, no benzophenone metabolite), Mexoryl SX and 400, mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide).

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Octocrylene is not recommended during pregnancy. Consider an alternative from the same category.
Octocrylene suits: normal. Use with caution in: sensitive.
Octocrylene has moderate irritation potential. Sensitive skin may show a transient reaction that usually settles with adaptation.
