Tyrosinase inhibitor by DSM, known under the Symwhite 377 brand. Works against hyperpigmentation and adds antioxidant protection.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
The manufacturer cites clinical tests with improved skin tone in 4–8 weeks. Independent large RCTs remain scarce, but the molecule shows good tolerance.
Phenylethyl Resorcinol (SymWhite 377) is a synthetic resorcinol derivative developed by Symrise. A depigmenting agent with dual mechanism: inhibits tyrosinase (the key enzyme of melanogenesis) and provides antioxidant activity protecting melanocytes from oxidative stress. Where applied. Serums and creams for hyperpigmentation, melasma, post-acne pigmentation, age spots. Concentration in finished products – 0.5–1%. Evidence base. In vitro studies showed stronger tyrosinase inhibition than kojic acid and arbutin. In vivo results – pigment spot reduction of 25–40% over 8–12 weeks with 0.5%. Comparative studies with hydroquinone 4% showed comparable effect without irritation and ochronosis. Safety. CIR/SCCS confirm safety at concentrations up to 1%. Irritation potential is low; no photosensitization described. Non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Direct data are limited; 0.5% concentration and minimal systemic absorption make risk low, but in pregnancy stronger-evidence ingredients are preferred – azelaic acid 10–20%, niacinamide 5%. What to combine with. Daily SPF 50+, niacinamide, vitamin C, low-concentration AHA. Effect develops slowly – full assessment at 12 weeks.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to iHerb, Sephora, Druni and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Safety data for Phenylethyl Resorcinol during pregnancy is insufficient. Best avoided when in doubt.
