Plant-derived humectant from corn. Works as a humectant and penetration booster for other actives, replaces propylene glycol in Korean formulas.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Mild humectant with good tolerance. Boosts active penetration into the stratum corneum, rarely triggers irritation.
Propanediol (1,3-Propanediol) is a dihydric alcohol of plant origin, produced by fermentation of corn or sugarcane (biotech Zemea/Susterra from DuPont Tate & Lyle). Alternative to propylene glycol with better tolerance. Where applied. Serums, creams, toners, shampoos, cleansing gels (3-15%). One of the key ingredients in Korean cosmetics. Has replaced propylene glycol in The Ordinary, Cosrx, Beauty of Joseon, La Roche-Posay. Mechanism. Humectant: retains water in the stratum corneum. Penetration booster: helps other water-soluble actives (niacinamide, ascorbate, peptides) reach the epidermis. Antimicrobial effect – suppresses formula bacterial growth and reduces preservative load. Evidence base. Comparative study (Lessmann 2018) showed 1,3-propanediol causes contact dermatitis 10 times less often than propylene glycol (1,2-propanediol). At 5-15% it is well tolerated in 95%+ of sensitive-skin patients. Safety. CIR confirmed safety up to 50%. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. Malassezia does not grow on propanediol – compatible with fungal-acne protocols. Pregnancy and lactation – safe.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Propanediol is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Propanediol suits: normal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive.
