Sodium Cholate is the sodium salt of cholic acid, a bile acid. INCI: Sodium Cholate. In cosmetics it is a biosurfactant: a mild cleansing and emulsifying agent that helps dissolve and stabilize oils and lipid structures in the water phase. It is used in cleansers, micellar formulas, and delivery systems that need to gather lipids into a stable dispersion. The molecule is amphiphilic like ordinary surfactants but milder than many synthetic ones. Pregnancy safety. In rinse-off and low-dose products, skin absorption is low and there is no evidence of harm with topical use. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low at usual concentrations. The component has no active cosmetic effects of its own; it is a functional surfactant and emulsifier.
