Sodium surfactin (INCI: Sodium Surfactin) is a biosurfactant produced by fermentation of Bacillus subtilis. In formulas it cleanses gently and helps bind oil and water, so it works both as a cleansing agent and as a mild emulsifier. This is a functional ingredient, not a skincare active. Its value is in cleansing and stabilizing the formula while treating the barrier kindly, not in addressing wrinkles or pigmentation. Against harsher synthetic surfactants, its mild profile is a real advantage for the skin. Topically there is no meaningful systemic exposure, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy risk are low and surfactant harshness is mild. That is why it fits cleansers aimed at sensitive skin, where it spares the lipid mantle better than many classic surfactants.
