Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Pediatric dermatology work records that topical almond oil in infants increases the risk of food sensitization. People with a nut allergy should avoid it.
Sweet Almond Oil (INCI Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil) is a fatty oil from sweet almond kernels. Contains 60-78% oleic acid, 20-30% linoleic acid, tocopherols, phytosterols. Mechanism. Forms a thin emollient film, softens skin, provides a mild slip. Fatty-acid ratio is closer to olive oil – more oleic, less linoleic. In atopic and barrier-impaired patients (especially infants) sunflower oil is preferred. Where applied. Massage oils, body products, lip balms, hair products. In Spain – ingredient in Babé Laboratorios baby oil, Mustela, many natural brands. Evidence base. Hydration and texture improvement in an RCT on 20 women over 4 weeks of 2% (Sumegová 2014). In atopics – less preferred due to high oleic acid content. Safety. CIR confirmed safety. Patients with nut allergy may show contact reactions – almond cross-reacts with hazelnut, cashew. Comedogenic in some acne patients (rating 2). Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Topical body use is acceptable, but avoid if the patient or child has a nut-allergy history. In infants at risk of food allergy (family history of atopy) dermatologists (Lack 2008, Brough 2014) recommend avoiding nut oils on skin – sensitisation risk.
