Alpha-hydroxy acid from grapes and other fruits. The largest AHA molecule after mandelic acid – penetrates slowly and irritates less than glycolic. Used as a mild exfoliant and pH adjuster. More often found in combination with other acids than as a sole active.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Clinical studies of isolated tartaric acid are essentially absent. In multi-acid formulas it complements other AHAs. Not used clinically as a sole exfoliant.
Tartaric Acid (L-tartaric acid) is a natural alpha-hydroxy acid from grapes, tamarind, bananas. After mandelic acid it is the largest molecule in the AHA class. Mechanism. Mild exfoliant: breaks corneocyte bonds in the stratum corneum and speeds desquamation. The large molecule penetrates slower than glycolic acid, so irritation is markedly lower. Also works as a pH adjuster and chelator. Where applied. Multi-acid peels, toners, gentle exfoliating products. More common in combination with other AHAs than as a sole active. In Spain – Sesderma Acglicolic, Mesoestetic Mela Peel. Evidence base. RCTs on tartaric acid are scarce. Most data are on tartaric–glycolic–lactic blends in peel formulas (15-30% at pH 3-3.5). Texture and hyperpigmentation effects show by 4-6 weeks. Safety. CIR confirmed safety up to 4% at pH ≥ 3.5 in leave-on and up to 30% in short-contact peels. Less irritating than glycolic, but transient sting is possible. Photosensitizes – daily SPF 30+ mandatory. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. AHAs up to 4% at pH ≥ 3.5 are allowed by AAD 2024 in pregnancy. Professional tartaric peels are not performed.

Tartaric Acid should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consulting a dermatologist or OB-GYN is advisable.
