INCI: Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol
Hybrid UV filter: works as both an organic absorber and a microparticle with physical reflection. Covers UVB and UVA, remains stable under sunlight.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
The dual mechanism provides broad protection with good tolerance. Microparticles do not penetrate deeply, so systemic exposure stays minimal.
Tinosorb M (INCI Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, MBBT) is a next-generation organic UV filter developed by BASF. A unique feature is its hybrid mechanism: microscopic particles absorb, reflect, and scatter UV radiation, placing it in the "organic mineral" category. Spectrum and photostability. Covers a broad UVA+UVB range (290-400 nm) with absorption peaks at 305 and 360 nm. Photostable, does not degrade under UV. Boosts SPF on its own without requiring combination with other filters for broad-spectrum coverage. Where applied. Sunscreens in La Roche-Posay Anthelios, Vichy Capital Soleil, Avène Solaire (up to 10% in EU). Approved in EU, Japan, Australia, Canada. Not FDA-approved as OTC sunscreen in the US. Safety. CIR/SCCS confirm safety at concentrations up to 10%. Irritation potential is low, no photosensitization described. Systemic absorption through intact skin is minimal due to large molecular size (>500 Da). Pregnancy and lactation – safe. EMA confirms safety for topical use. No teratogenic effects described. One of the preferred filters in pregnancy in Spanish dermatologic practice. Advantages over avobenzone. Avobenzone is photo-unstable and requires stabilizers (octocrylene); Tinosorb M is photostable. Tinosorb M is also less irritating and leaves no white cast, unlike mineral filters.
