Newest UV filter by BASF (Tinosorb A2B), approved in the EU since 2019. Covers the borderline UVA2/UVB range where classic filters fall short.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Micronized organic filter that behaves similarly to mineral filters. Covers the critical spectrum gap between UVB and short UVA.
Tris-Biphenyl Triazine (trade name Tinosorb A2B) is an organic UV filter from BASF approved in the EU in 2019. It covers the borderline UVA2/UVB region (310-340 nm) where classic filters fall short. Mechanism. Absorbs UV in the 310-340 nm range with a peak at 320 nm. Complements other UV filters: pairing with Uvinul T 150 (Octyl Triazone, UVB) and Tinosorb S (Bemotrizinol, UVA1-UVB) gives a balanced profile across the whole UV spectrum. Photostable; does not degrade under the sun within 24 hours in standard ISO tests. Where applied. Premium EU sunscreens after 2020. In Spain it already appears in Heliocare 360 Color Gel Oil-Free, Bioderma Photoderm Max, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 (the latter is heavily marketed as 'long-wave UVA protection'). EU max concentration – 10%. Evidence base. BASF registration studies and SCCS Opinion 2019 confirmed efficacy and safety. Adding 5% Tinosorb A2B raises SPF by roughly 10-15 units; PPD UVA protection rises 30-50%. Safety. SCCS confirmed safety up to 10% in creams and 5% in sprays. Non-sensitising, non-comedogenic. The molecule is large (758 Da); topical systemic absorption is low (<1%). Not an endocrine disruptor. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. SCCS noted lack of pregnancy data but did not contraindicate it. AEMPS patient guides do not ban it, but for pregnant women with melasma European dermatologists more often recommend mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide). Not approved. In the US – not FDA approved; in Australia – not on the TGA whitelist. EU and Canada – yes.
