Avena Sativa Kernel Oil is a cold-pressed fatty vegetable oil from Avena sativa kernels. Contains linoleic (~40%), oleic (~35%), palmitic (~17%) acids, phytosterols, and vitamin E. Mechanism. On skin it acts as an emollient and mild occlusive. Linoleic acid embeds into intercellular epidermal ceramides and helps rebuild the lipid barrier in atopic dermatitis and dry skin. Phytosterols and tocopherols provide a gentle anti-inflammatory effect. Where applied. Creams and balms for dry and atopic skin (1–10%), baby products, body oils. In Spain part of Mustela Stelatopia, Aveeno Skin Relief, Saforelle Crème Lavante (intimate care). Often combined with oat extract (avena sativa kernel extract) and colloidal oat for additive effect: the oil rebuilds lipids while the extract delivers β-glucans and avenanthramides for anti-inflammatory action. Evidence base. Boralevi 2014 (n=58, 12 weeks) and Cestone 2017 showed SCORAD improvement and itch reduction in children with atopic dermatitis using oat oil and extract emollients. AAD 2024 lists oat-based emollients as a first-line option in dry and atopic skin. Safety. CIR confirmed cosmetic safety. Non-comedogenic up to 10%, non-irritating. Contact allergy is rare but described in some atopics, more often to the oat protein fraction than to the oil itself. 'Pas Avena' in French labelling indicates a protein-free version. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Used by pregnant and nursing women on hands, body, nipples, and breasts after showering. Suitable for infants from 0 months. Particularly suitable for. Dry and dehydrated skin, atopic dermatitis, xerosis, patients after long courses of retinoids or AHAs. A universal safe emollient for the home kit.
