Borage seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Borago officinalis. INCI: Borago Officinalis Seed Oil. It is a plant oil exceptionally rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential omega-6 fatty acid. In a formula it works as an emollient and barrier-support component. GLA is part of skin lipids and takes part in anti-inflammatory processes, so the oil makes sense for dry, flaky, and atopy-prone skin. Clinical data on the effect in atopic dermatitis are mixed, so it is a useful barrier component rather than a treatment with a proven therapeutic result. Pregnancy safety. Topical use is systemically negligible, with no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low, suitable for dry and sensitive skin.
