C30-45 Alkyl Cetearyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer (as listed in the INCI) is a silicone structurant. Its job is to thicken the oil phase and gel oils, which stabilizes the texture and improves the product's feel. It appears in solid bases, oil gels and long-wear formulas. It is a functional ingredient, not a cosmetic active. It does not moisturize or treat the skin; its work is the structure and feel of the formula. At that task it is effective and gives stable, pleasant textures. Applied topically it is not meaningfully absorbed, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk. Silicone polymers of this type are considered well tolerated, including on sensitive skin.
