About this ingredient
Erythrulose (INCI: Erythrulose) is a sugar that works as a self-tanner. It reacts with the proteins in the outermost layer of skin and produces a gradual golden color, softer and slower than dihydroxyacetone, with which it is often combined for a more even and longer-lasting tone. On efficacy, it genuinely delivers color, but it is a surface cosmetic effect. The tan offers no sun protection and fades gradually as the skin renews itself. Paired with DHA it gives a more natural, less orange finish. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk. The color is temporary and not comedogenic. It is worth remembering that a self-tan shade does not replace sunscreen: skin still needs photoprotection against the sun.
