CI 77499 is black iron oxide, a mineral pigment with the formula Fe₃O₄ (magnetite). In cosmetic labelling it appears as Iron Oxide Black or CI 77499. Used in mascaras, eyeliners, dark-shade foundations, and tinted sunscreens. Combined with CI 77491 (red) and CI 77492 (yellow) it forms the base palette for natural skin tones. Also used as a pigment in permanent makeup and medical cosmetics for scar and vitiligo correction. Pregnancy safety. CI 77499 is considered safe during pregnancy. The pigment is inert, does not penetrate intact skin, has no systemic activity. Used in everyday cosmetics in pregnancy without restrictions. Skin safety. Very low allergenicity and irritation. Suitable for sensitive, post-acne skin, and patients with rosacea. Non-comedogenic. UV and HEV protection. Like other iron oxides, CI 77499 absorbs visible blue light (HEV) and part of UVA. Tinted sunscreens with CI 77499 + CI 77491 + CI 77492 + titanium dioxide deliver better HEV protection, especially useful in melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Magnetic properties. Magnetite is weakly ferromagnetic, which is exploited in decorative magnetic masks. Safety is unaffected – household-level magnetic fields are biologically inert. Regulatory status. Approved by the FDA, EFSA, EU Cosmetic Regulation, and Health Canada. CIR confirms safety for topical use, including the eye area. Bottom line. CI 77499 is a safe mineral pigment with a long history of use. Suitable for pregnancy, sensitive skin, and patients with hyperpigmentation. In tinted sunscreens it helps shield against HEV light.
