Isopentane is a volatile hydrocarbon that works as a light solvent. It helps a film dry fast and spread the formula thinly and evenly, which is why it shows up in makeup bases, long-wear products and some sunscreens. This is a functional ingredient, not an active. It does not treat the skin; its use is fast evaporation and an even, non-heavy finish. After application it evaporates almost completely, leaving the other ingredients spread across the skin. At cosmetic proportions and applied topically it has no meaningful systemic absorption, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation and allergy potential, compatible with sensitive skin. Because it is volatile, some skin may feel a slight passing dryness, which in normal use does not mean barrier damage.
