Dodecane (INCI: Dodecane) is a light hydrocarbon that works as a solvent and volatile emollient. In a formula it evaporates quickly, leaves a light feel and helps carry other ingredients to the skin surface. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. Its value lies in texture, a fast finish and its solvent role, not in treating specific skin concerns. At that task it is reliable. Applied topically it has no systemic impact, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high, with low irritation and allergy potential. Comedogenicity is very low (1 out of 5). Because it is volatile, on already very dry skin it is worth pairing with sealing emollients, though on its own it does not markedly dry the skin.
