A soothing plant oil. Safe, well tolerated.
Echium plantagineum seed oil (INCI Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil) is a plant oil rich in stearidonic acid, an uncommon omega-3 fatty acid. In a formula it acts as an emollient that softens and as a source of fatty acids that help support the skin barrier. There is real substance here. The fatty-acid profile is interesting for dry, reactive skin and gives a genuine soothing feel, though it is not an anti-inflammatory of pharmacological strength. It works well as a supporting emollient inside creams and serums rather than as a standalone star active. Topically its systemic impact is negligible, so it can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is well tolerated: irritation and allergy risk are low. Comedogenicity is very low (1 out of 5), so problems are rare, though very oily or acne-prone skin can watch how it reacts. As a seed oil, anyone with plant-oil allergies should patch test first.
