A functional fatty acid. Safe.
Behenic acid (INCI: Behenic Acid) is a saturated, very-long-chain fatty acid (C22). In a formula it works as a thickener and consistency agent: it structures the oil phase, gives a cream body and leaves an emollient feel. This is a functional component, not a treatment active. Its job is texture and stability: it helps a cream hold the right firmness and resist separating. It brings no corrective effect on skin, and none is asked of it. In topical use it lacks systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without trouble. It is well tolerated, with low irritation and allergy potential, fine for sensitive skin. Its comedogenicity is low (around 1), so it rarely causes problems, though on very oily skin it is always worth watching how the whole product responds.
