Glyceryl stearates (INCI: Glyceryl Stearates) are a blend of glycerin and stearic acid esters that combines an emollient with a co-emulsifier. In a formula it softens skin while helping hold a creamy, stable texture. It is a base functional component, not a treatment active. Its value lies in the structure and comfort of the formula: it gives a soft feel and keeps the emulsion from separating. The mild emollient effect it leaves on skin is real, but it is not a transformative active. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good and the allergy potential is low. Its comedogenicity is moderate (2 out of 5), so on oily or acne-prone skin it is worth watching the response, though most formulas use it at levels that cause no trouble.
