In cosmetics it is used for its humectant effect and for its interest in supporting a more even skin tone. It appears in serums, creams and hydration or brightening formulas. On efficacy it sits between a humectant and a supporting active. Glucosamine is a precursor of hyaluronic acid and takes part in melanin synthesis, which gives a plausible basis for its uses. Still, the evidence for a clear brightening effect at cosmetic concentrations is modest, so it is best seen as support rather than a main treatment for dark spots. For topical use it has no systemic relevance and can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: low irritation potential and low allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin.
