Diatomaceous Earth is a mineral powder made of the silica shells of fossilised microscopic algae. On the label it reads Diatomaceous Earth. In cosmetics it absorbs sebum and gives a matte finish, and thanks to its porous structure it also works as a mild abrasive in scrubs. On efficacy, place it this way: it is a functional component with two clear uses, mattifying and mechanical exfoliation. It is not a treatment active that acts on wrinkles or pigmentation. In its absorbing and polishing role it does the job, provided the grain is well calibrated so it is not harsh. For pregnancy and breastfeeding there is no restriction for topical use. It stays on the surface with no systemic impact, so it can be used. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy are low. As a mechanical exfoliant it is best used gently and infrequently on reactive or rosacea-prone skin, to avoid stressing the barrier.
