Dibutyl lauroyl glutamide (INCI: Dibutyl Lauroyl Glutamide) is a gelling agent derived from the amino acid glutamic acid. In formulas it structures the oil phase and keeps oils and sunscreen filters evenly dispersed. This is a functional ingredient. Its role is to give consistency and stability, mostly in sunscreens and anhydrous formulas, not to act on the skin. To the skin it is essentially inert and serves its technical purpose. Topically there is no meaningful systemic exposure, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy risk are both low. Because it stays built into the formula structure and does not act on the skin, it rarely causes reactions, even on sensitive skin.
