INCI: Leontopodium Alpinum Extract
Alpine edelweiss extract with leontopodic and chlorogenic acids. Protects skin cells from UV damage in lab models, delivers antioxidant action.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Antioxidant activity is confirmed in vitro. Clinical studies on topical effects against photoaging are weak.
Edelweiss Extract (INCI Leontopodium Alpinum Extract) is derived from the alpine flower Leontopodium alpinum, growing at 1800-3000 meters in the Alps, Carpathians, and Balkans. Extreme conditions led the plant to develop powerful antioxidant protection. Composition. Leontopodic acid, chlorogenic acid, β-sitosterol, luteolin, apigenin. Antioxidant activity comparable to vitamin E and ascorbic acid in vitro. Mechanism. At the cellular level it inhibits UV-induced metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-9) that degrade collagen. Suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6). Chelates free radicals. On skin theoretically slows photoaging and supports dermal matrix integrity. Where applied. Anti-aging serums and creams, anti-photoaging products, 'alpine extracts' marketed products. In Spain – niche Swiss brands (Valmont, La Prairie), Austrian lines, and in 'extreme nature' focused formulas. Evidence base. Limited human RCTs. Cho 2008 in vitro confirmed antioxidant effect comparable to vitamin E. Topical clinical data with instrumental skin assessment – isolated open-label studies with antioxidant defense improvement at 4-8 weeks, without confirmation in large RCTs. Safety. CIR has not issued a direct evaluation. By the plant extract profile – low irritation and allergy risk. Reactions possible in patients allergic to Asteraceae family (ragweed, mugwort, chamomile) – cross-sensitization. Pregnancy and lactation – with caution. Plants with potential phytoactivity are avoided in pregnancy as a precaution. No direct evidence of harm, but safety data are insufficient. Best suited to: mature photoaged skin, antioxidant defense in daytime formulas. Not for patients with Asteraceae allergy.

CautionThe Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Edelweiss Extract should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consulting a dermatologist or OB-GYN is advisable.
