Maris Sal is sea salt, a mix of sodium chloride with trace minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. In cosmetics it's used to adjust the texture of gels and masks, as a physical exfoliant in scrubs, and for a toning sensation. On efficacy: a functional and sensory ingredient. It thickens or modifies the viscosity of certain formulas and, in scrubs, exfoliates mechanically. Claims about remineralizing the skin through trace elements run ahead of the data; real mineral uptake through skin is marginal. Treat it as a texture agent, not a treatment. Topical use during pregnancy and breastfeeding poses no problem. Baseline irritation and allergy are low. At high concentrations or on cracked skin, salt can sting, and salt scrubs can be abrasive for sensitive skin, so moderation helps.
