Propyl Gallate (INCI: Propyl Gallate) is a stabilizing antioxidant. In a formula it protects the oil phase from oxidation, preventing oils and fats from going rancid and extending product stability. This is a functional ingredient, not a treatment active. It works for the formula, not for the skin: its antioxidant action protects oils in the jar, rather than acting as a skin antioxidant for care. At cosmetic concentrations systemic exposure is minimal, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance at cosmetic doses is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, suitable for sensitive skin. It is worth knowing that in already sensitized people gallates can be an uncommon contact allergen; most people show no reaction, and it is not linked to clogged pores.
