This is a functional ingredient with a specific role, physical exfoliation. On its own it does not treat wrinkles or pigmentation; the skin looks smoother because the surface is polished. Its effect depends on particle size: a fine, rounded grind is reasonable, while large angular grains can be harsh. In topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Irritation and allergy potential of the material itself are low, but because of its mechanical action it does not suit every skin.
