In a formula it works as a gentle physical exfoliant: its particles help remove dead cells and clean the skin in scrubs and powder masks. It is a functional ingredient with a mechanical exfoliation role, not a chemical treatment active. It works to polish the skin's surface, with the advantage of a relatively fine grain compared with harsher scrubs. Its effect is improved feel and cleansing, with no claim of deep transformation.
