A green tea polyphenol. A strong antioxidant, it helps soothe skin and protect from free radicals. Well tolerated.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
An antioxidant active. Safe.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the main catechin polyphenol of green tea. INCI: Epigallocatechin Gallate. In a formula it works as a strong antioxidant: it neutralizes free radicals, supports defense against UV oxidative stress, and shows anti-inflammatory potential. EGCG has a solid lab antioxidant base, but in cosmetics its effectiveness is limited by instability: it oxidizes quickly, so much depends on its stabilization and form in the formula. It is a useful supporting antioxidant rather than a treatment with a large clinical base. Pregnancy safety. Topical use is systemically negligible, with no evidence of harm. It can be used during pregnancy and lactation. Tolerance. Irritation and allergen potential are low.
