Sodium saccharin (INCI Sodium Saccharin) is the sodium salt of a synthetic sweetener. In cosmetics it adds a sweet taste and shows up mostly in lip balms, toothpastes and oral-care products, where it improves the using experience rather than treating the skin. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. It does not hydrate, supply antioxidants or change the skin barrier. Its only job is sensory: masking the bitter taste of other ingredients. Expecting a skin effect from it has no basis. Applied topically it is not absorbed to any meaningful systemic degree, so in these formats it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerability is good. Irritation and allergy potential are both low, so it fits formulas for sensitive skin and for lips. It is not comedogenic.
