Mild dicarboxylic acid with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action. Popular in Korean and Indian acne cosmetics.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
In vitro studies show activity against Cutibacterium acnes and reduced inflammation cytokines. Large clinical trials remain insufficient.
Succinic Acid (butanedioic acid) is a mild dicarboxylic acid. A natural Krebs cycle metabolite, present in amber and many plants. In dermatology – an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial active. Mechanism. Suppresses Cutibacterium acnes growth in vitro and reduces inflammation via NF-κB inhibition. Mild keratolytic and exfoliant – gentler than glycolic and salicylic acids. Where applied. Anti-acne products, especially popular in Korean and Indian cosmetics (The Inkey List Succinic Acid, Dr. Jart+ Peel-Off). Cosmetic concentration 2-10%, in spot treatments up to 15%. Evidence base. Klaus 2018 in vitro showed C. acnes suppression comparable to 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Clinical RCTs are scarce: one small 30-patient 2021 study showed 30% acne reduction over 8 weeks at 10%. Evidence base is below salicylic acid and niacinamide. Safety. CIR confirmed safety at cosmetic concentrations. Non-sensitizing, gently tolerated, no stinging. Non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. One of the few anti-acne ingredients allowed in gestation (alongside niacinamide, azelaic acid, sulfur).

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Succinic Acid is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
