Tamanu Seed Oil (INCI Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil) is a synonym card to tamanu-oil. A dark-green fatty oil from seeds of the Polynesian tamanu tree. Used in traditional medicine as a wound-healing and anti-inflammatory ingredient. Mechanism. Active components – the triterpenes calophyllolide and inophyllin – deliver anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. Fatty acids restore the lipid barrier. The dark pigment contains xanthones and natural UV filters (sun protection is weak and does not replace a sunscreen). Where applied. Problem-skin products, post-acne mark treatments, scar formulations. Natural brands (RMS Beauty, Drunk Elephant, Naobay). Evidence base. Léguillier 2015 in vitro (antibacterial activity, fibroblasts), a few small clinical studies in acne with mixed results. Evidence base falls below tretinoin, azelaic acid, BPO. Safety. CIR has not issued a dedicated report. Patients with nut allergy may show contact reactions. Not for atopics and infants. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution.
