Amino-acid osmolyte – protects keratinocytes from osmotic and oxidative stress. Pregnancy-safe.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Osmolyte with mild protective action. Moderate evidence.
Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a sulfur-containing sulfonic acid biochemically related to amino acids but without a carboxyl group. The body synthesizes taurine from methionine and cysteine in liver and brain; dietary sources include meat and seafood. In skin, taurine acts as an osmolyte – it stabilizes keratinocyte volume under shifts in external humidity. Where it is used. Serums and creams for sensitive, dehydrated, reactive skin; post-procedure products (laser, peel); mature-skin formulations with antioxidant complexes. Concentrations 0.5-3%. In Spain: Sesderma Hidraderm, Mesoestetic Hydra-Vital, ISDIN K-Ox Eyes. Mechanism. Taurine accumulates in keratinocytes and maintains osmotic balance under dry air, UV, and oxidative stress. It stabilizes membranes by binding phospholipids. It has mild antioxidant activity through scavenging of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a key inflammatory metabolite. At hair follicles it supports the anagen phase (Janich 2005), which justifies inclusion in anti-shedding products. Evidence base. Topical taurine for skin – evidence base C-D, with individual pilot studies (Bouchama 2017, n=24, improved barrier function over 4 weeks). Hair data are stronger – a double-blind trial by Lengg (2007, n=29) showed reduced shedding with oral taurine + lysine + B-vitamins over 6 months. Topical scalp data are less convincing. Safety. Pregnancy and breastfeeding – topical use is safe. Oral taurine is acceptable up to 3 g/day (EFSA 2009), but topical cosmetics yield sub-milligram absorption. Irritation and allergy are very rare. Practical notes. In a hair or skin serum, taurine usually sits at INCI position 4-8 at 0.5-2%. Compatible with all actives: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptides, retinoids on alternate days. Not to be confused with the 1000 mg taurine in energy drinks, which works through a different CNS mechanism.

SafeThe Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to Wildberries, Goldapple, Letu, iHerb, Sephora and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Taurine is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Taurine suits: normal, dry, combination, oily, sensitive.
Amino-acid osmolyte – protects keratinocytes from osmotic and oxidative stress.
On the Fulton scale 0/5 – non-comedogenic. For acne-prone skin, a rating of 3 or higher suggests choosing an alternative.
The INCI name is Taurine. It may also appear as: таурин.
