Triisopropanolamine (INCI: Triisopropanolamine) is an alkaline pH regulator. In a formula it neutralizes acidic thickeners such as certain carbomers and adjusts pH so the product reaches the intended texture and stability. This is a functional ingredient, not a treatment active. Its work is chemical and formulation-based, with no effect of its own on wrinkles, pigmentation or barrier. At cosmetic pH-adjusting concentrations its systemic relevance is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance at cosmetic doses is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, suitable for sensitive skin. Like any base, in excess it could shift pH and irritate, but at in-use doses this does not happen; it is not linked to clogged pores. This is a secondary or tertiary amine. With nitrosating preservatives (bronopol and similar) or their impurities it can form carcinogenic nitrosamines, so that pairing in a formula is undesirable. On its own, without a nitrosating agent, the nitrosamine concern does not apply.
