Beta-Caryophyllene is a natural terpene, a scent component of clove, black pepper, and many essential oils. INCI: Beta-Caryophyllene. In a formula it is used as a fragrance with a warm spicy-woody note. It is primarily an aroma component. Research notes anti-inflammatory potential via the CB2 cannabinoid receptor, but in cosmetics there is no meaningful proven skincare effect from topical use, and the main role is fragrance. Allergenicity. Beta-Caryophyllene is counted among potential fragrance contact allergens, and its activity rises on oxidation. A reaction is possible in sensitized people; most do not react.
