In a formula it gives a fresh sensation on the skin without the sharp smell or volatility of pure menthol, useful in after-sun and soothing products. As an active it is a sensory ingredient. It creates a pleasant cooling feel, but it does not treat the skin or truly calm it on a biological level; the effect is perceptual, not therapeutic. It should be read as a touch of comfort rather than a functional skin active. Topically it is not systemically relevant, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern.
