Camphor is a natural or synthetic substance with a sharp cooling aroma. INCI: Camphor. In a formula it works as a cooling, counterirritant component and fragrance: on application it gives a feeling of coolness and light tingling, so it is added to after-sun products, balms, and warming-cooling products. It is a functional-sensory and aroma component, not a skincare active. A cooling sensation does not equal a skincare effect. Tolerance and safety. Camphor can irritate skin and mucous membranes and is counted among potential allergens. Important: camphor must not be applied to the face of infants and young children or used at high concentrations. In pregnancy concentrated camphor is treated with caution; at small cosmetic doses it is topically systemically negligible.
