Capryl/Capramidopropyl Betaine (INCI: Capryl/Capramidopropyl Betaine) is an amphoteric surfactant. It cleanses gently, builds foam and, above all, softens the action of stronger primary surfactants. It is used as a co-surfactant in shower gels, shampoos and facial cleansers. On efficacy it is a functional component. Its value lies in improving the feel and mildness of the cleansing system, not in treating the skin as an active. It helps make a cleanser less harsh without losing foam. For topical use it has no systemic relevance and can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: it is a mild surfactant, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin. Because it softens the formula, it usually reduces the tight feeling after cleansing compared with bases built on harsher surfactants.
