Caprylic acid (INCI Caprylic Acid) is a short-chain fatty acid of coconut origin. In a formula it plays a support role: it helps hold back microbial growth and takes part in the emulsion structure alongside other emollients and emulsifiers. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. On its own it does not hydrate or treat; its value lies in stabilizing the formula and backing up preservation. Expecting an anti-aging or soothing effect from it has no basis. Applied topically it is not systemically relevant, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue. Tolerability is good. Irritation and allergy potential are both low, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin. Its comedogenicity is minimal (level 1), a minor point even for oily skin.
