Caprylic/Capric/Succinic Triglyceride is a modified MCT in which part of the fatty acids is replaced by succinic acid. This changes the molecule's polarity: the ingredient is partially water-miscible and acts as a bridge between hydrophilic and lipid phases of an emulsion. Produced by trans-esterification of glycerol with caprylic, capric, and succinic acids. Made by BASF (trade name Cetiol C5). Where applied. Light serums, fluids, gel sunscreens, makeup primers. A solvent for oil-soluble UV filters (avobenzone, octocrylene) and vitamins A and E – helps them stay stable in formula. In Spain it appears in gel sunscreens like ISDIN Fotoprotector, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra Fluid. Evidence base. No standalone skin activity – a functional ingredient, texture modifier and co-emulsifier. The manufacturer (BASF) reports improved SPF efficacy due to more even filter distribution. Independent direct RCTs are lacking. Safety. CIR – safe at use concentrations. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, non-irritating. Unlike classic MCTs, it leaves a less oily finish. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Systemic skin absorption is nil. Acceptable at any stage. Suitable for. Oily, combination, acne-prone skin, summer routines, Mediterranean climate. In dry climates – combine with more occlusive lipids (squalane, dimethicone, ceramides).

Caprylic/Capric/Succinic Triglyceride is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
