Light liquid silicone emollient. Replaces cyclomethicones with a better environmental profile; non-greasy slip.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Functional silicone emollient. Well tolerated, allergy is extremely rare. No clinical action.
Caprylyl Methicone is a light liquid silicone emollient, a hybrid of dimethicone and a C8 (caprylic) alkyl chain. Technically a linear polysiloxane with caprylic side groups. Made as a replacement for cyclomethicone (D4, D5) – the volatile silicones EU SCCS restricted in 2020 in leave-on products. Mechanism. Forms a thin, gas-permeable film on the skin that smooths texture and gives a matte finish. Unlike heavier oils, leaves no stickiness. Less occlusive than dimethicone but provides better sensory slip and pigment dispersion in makeup. Where applied. Primers, foundations, BB creams, eye-area products, light-textured sunscreens, setting powders. Used at 1-15%. In Spain – in Vichy Dermablend, ISDIN Photo Fusion Water, La Roche-Posay UVMune. Evidence base. Manufacturers (Dow, Wacker) provide sensory comparisons with cyclopentasiloxane (D5) – users cannot tell them apart by feel. EU SCCS included caprylyl methicone in the list of allowed cyclosiloxane substitutes in 2021. No direct clinical RCTs – the ingredient has no standalone skin action. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of linear alkyl methicones up to 50%. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, non-irritating. Topical systemic absorption is nil (large molecule). Silicone controversy. Not cyclic – so not D4/D5/D6 restricted in the EU for environmental persistence. Still, linear silicones biodegrade slowly (10-50% within 28 days per OECD 301B). For eco-focused patients, squalane, isoamyl laurate, and cellulose film-formers are better picks. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Acceptable at any stage in any cosmetic. Suitable for. Any skin including sensitive, acne-prone, post-procedure. Good for enlarged pores and uneven texture – gives visual surface smoothing.

Caprylyl Methicone is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Caprylyl Methicone suits: normal, dry, oily, combination, sensitive.
