Di-C12-13 Alkyl Malate is an ester of malic acid with C12-C13 chain alcohols. Synthesized from plant sources or petrochemically, depending on the supplier. A light emollient with a silky feel. Mechanism. On skin it provides a dry glide, leaves no greasy film, replaces cyclic silicones (D5, cyclomethicone) restricted by the EU for environmental reasons. Works as a solvent for oil-soluble actives, pigment carrier in color cosmetics. Where applied. Foundations, lipsticks, primers, eye products, light serums and creams for oily skin, sunscreens labeled 'light texture'. In Spain – ISDIN Fotoprotector Age Repair line, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune, niche 'silicone-free' marketed formulas. Evidence base. A functional ingredient with relatively recent adoption (last 5-10 years). Sensory and pigment distribution effect confirmed in standard formulator tests. No active skin pharmacology – a functional ingredient. Safety. CIR has not issued a direct evaluation specifically for C12-13 alkyl malate, but for related ester emollients in the class – safety is confirmed. Non-comedogenic, non-irritating, allergies rare. Normal safety profile. Pregnancy and lactation – safe at standard cosmetic concentrations. Best suited to: any skin type. Especially interesting in oily and combination skin formulas, in sunscreens and color cosmetics as a cyclic silicone alternative.
