Magnesium Oleth Sulfate (INCI: Magnesium Oleth Sulfate) is a sulfate surfactant derived from oleyl fatty alcohols, with magnesium as the counterion. In a formula it cleanses and foams in shampoos, gels, and cleansers. It is a functional cleansing ingredient, not a care active. It lifts oil and dirt and provides foam; beyond washing it does not hydrate or treat the skin. In rinse-off topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is moderate. Irritation and allergy are low, but like any strong sulfate, frequent use can dry skin and scalp, especially dry or sensitive skin. If tightness shows up, it helps to alternate with gentler cleansers.
