Magnesium Laureth Sulfate (INCI: Magnesium Laureth Sulfate) is a sulfate surfactant with magnesium as the counterion, considered somewhat milder than the sodium versions. In a formula it cleanses and foams in shampoos, gels, and cleansers. It is a functional cleansing ingredient, not a care active. Its role is to lift oil and dirt and produce good foam; it provides no hydration or benefit beyond washing. In rinse-off topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is moderate. Irritation and allergy are low, but because of its cleansing power, frequent use can dry skin and scalp, especially on dry or barrier-compromised skin. If you feel tightness, it helps to alternate with gentler cleansers.
