Magnesium Laureth-8 Sulfate (INCI: Magnesium Laureth-8 Sulfate) is a more highly ethoxylated sulfate surfactant with magnesium as the counterion. The longer chain tends to make it somewhat milder; in a formula it cleanses and foams in shampoos and gels. It is a functional cleansing ingredient, not a care active. Its job is to lift oil and dirt and give pleasant foam, with no claim to hydrate or treat the skin beyond washing. In rinse-off topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is moderate. Irritation and allergy are low, but frequent use can dry skin and scalp, especially on dry skin. If tightness appears, it helps to alternate with gentler cleansers.
