Sodium palm kernelate (INCI: Sodium Palm Kernelate) is the sodium salt of palm kernel oil fatty acids, that is, soap already formed from that oil. It is the base of many solid soap bars, where it gives dense lather and good cleansing power. It is a functional component, not a care active. Its role is to be the product's cleansing matrix, not to provide treatment benefits. As a classic soap base it cleanses effectively but with an alkaline pH that tends to degrease. Topically, in rinse-off format, systemic absorption is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Irritation potential and allergy risk are low, but its surfactant action is moderate: dry, sensitive or barrier-compromised skin may feel tight. In those cases it helps to alternate with lower-pH syndet cleansers and apply a moisturizer afterwards.
